The Crow's Nest
Order of the Arrow

August 2004

Chapter Chief

My Fellow Arrowmen,

I would like to start by congratulating all of you who worked at this year's Corn Festival. I would furthermore like to congratulate all of you who helped at the Sunday night clean-up.

Coming up on August 28 will be the Chapter Local Area Network (LAN) party. Bring your computer with your favorite online games and prepare to take on the rest of the Crow Chapter. It will be a night of fun and great fellowship. The time has come to prove that Crow Chapter is the best in the Wiatava Lodge at Pow-Wow. However we will need every one in the Chapter to come out to Lost Valley and prove it September 10-12. People will be needed to compete in everything from sports such as volley ball, tug-o-war, archery, and Ultimate Frisbee. Also show your support for those competing in other events such as camping promotions and Indian dancing. Yell and cheer as we bring home Yogi, the spirit award.

Did your friend in the troop miss the Ordeal back in May for whatever reason? Would you like to earn your Brotherhood Honor, or just be and Elangomat? Then be sure to go to the Wiatava Lodge fall ordeal which this year will be held at Lake Oso. You won't want to miss it.

The September Chapter meeting will be our elections for the 2005 Chapter Board. If you or someone you know would be good in one of the board positions, be sure to come and nominate them in August, so they can be on the September ballet. And so you know the positions we will be voting on are Chief, Executive Vice Chief, Vice Chief of Service, VC of Activities, VC of Camp Promotions, VC of Indian Affairs, Secretary, and Treasurer. Be sure to be at the chapter meeting on August 26 to meet the hopefuls, and then the September meeting on the 23 rd when you pick the winners. Both start at 7:30 PM and are at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in La Habra. I hope to see all of you there.

Yours in Brotherhood,
- Justin W.

Howdy y'all,

Howdy. I would appreciate it if all the other board members would give me your articles via e-mail or in disk format (please, it saves me time and patience). I ask that you send it to me by the Sunday after the board meeting so I can make sure that it gets in the newsletter. Thanks.

And there are still several unknown addresses in our Chapter... these will be posted each month. Here are this month's:

  • Raymond Crosslin
  • William Preston
  • Gary Hagelbarger
  • Robert Berson-Gallegos
  • Marry Warren
If you have their correct address, please contact me with 'em.

Crow Chapter Advisor's Corner

I wanted to thank everyone who helped by working at the La Habra Corn Festival. This is our biggest event of the year. For those of you who missed the Corn Festival I'll be looking for your help next year. The Chief and a number of our members including myself just returned from NOAC, Nation Order of the Arrow Conference, in Iowa. It was an excellent conference and a really fun time. I wish every one of you could have had the opportunity to attend. We are all fired up to make this next year the best year in the history of Crow Chapter, and will need your help to make that dream a reality.

In the coming months we have a number of fun and exciting activities a head of us. I urge every one of you to get involved in Crow Chapter and attend as many of these events as you can. The first event is our LAN Party on August 28 & 29 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Bring your PC and your favorite PC games for a fun time at this all night affair. There is a rumor that we may have PS2s and X-boxes at the event. Next is the Wiatava Lodge Pow Wow on September 10-12 at Los Valley. Pow Wow is the OA equivalent of Camporee. Crow Chapter will be competing against all the other chapters in the lodge in a number of fun events and competitions. We need, every member to be on a team at this event if we are to be the best Chapter in the Lodge. Also, the Spirit Award will be given to the Chapter that shows the most spirit at the event. Then on September 24 - 26 is Wiatava Lodge Fall Ordeal at Oso Lake. This is a chance for Ordeal members with 10 or months of service to confirm their commitment to the Order of the Arrow by earning their Brotherhood Honor. Mr. Woodard will be testing for the Brotherhood Honor at the August Chapter Meeting, so if you're interested in advancing now is the time. Also, we need you to encourage all the Scouts in your Troop who tapped out at Camporee, but could not attend the Spring Ordeal to attend the Fall Ordeal.

At the August Chapter meeting the Chief will be opening nomination for next years Chapter Board Officers. This is your chance to get involved and help guide and direct Crow Chapter . Also, there will be planning and work done to get ready for the Pow Wow. There are a number of openings on our Dance and Ceremonies Teams that the board will be looking to fill. You will be able to get permission slips for all the above mentioned events. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Chapter meeting on August 26 at 7:30 PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
